Temptation. Why do we fall to temptation? What have you been tempted by recently? Tempted to continue bad habits? Tempted to indulge in fatty foods? Tempted to escape into entertainment? Tempted to run into the arms of a lover? Tempted to watch others have sex? Temptation, temptation, temptation. Temptation is all around us. There are hundreds of things that try and tempt us everyday. Why do we give in to them? More importantly, why do we choose to give in them? Giving into a temptation is a choice… a conscious choice. You must be aware of your state of mind when deciding to give in to a temptation or not. Let’s take a second look at temptation and break down the causes for giving into our temptations.
As I mentioned in a previous article, these are three simple reminders to help you overcome your temptations. 1)Understand What A Temptation Is. All temptations are illusions of fulfillment. 2) Know When You’re Most Vulnerable To A Temptation. A good way to overcome your temptations is by being mentally prepared for them. 3) Remind Yourself Of The Consequences Of Succumbing To Your Temptation. Discover the end results of giving in to your temptations. See if they will bring you good rewards in the end.
Temptations put to test our knowledge of what is right for us and what wrong for us. When we give in to temptation, many times we know what the end result will be, but somehow, someway, our mind convinces us that the experience will be “different” or “new.” However, once we give in, experience the temptation, and then are done with the experience, we come to the horrible known conclusion that we failed and didn’t gain anything from that temptation. All that we are left with is the consequences of our actions… which usually isn’t good. The temptations that we give into over time will lead to our downfall. They will become habits, then addictions. And before we know it, we find ourselves in a downward spiral of confusion, suffering, and misery. And where did it start? Giving in to those small temptations. Realize that if you can’t overcome the small temptations, you are more likely be unable to overcome the bigger ones.
We must recognize when our temptations come and be aware that whatever doors we open to that temptation, are doors that will be harder to close overtime. Be vigilant. Stay disciplined. The rewards for overcoming a temptation are a thousand times more fulfilling than the rewards for giving into temptation. One reward will uplift you, the other will destroy you. Choose wisely friends.
